Goal setting is one of the most important parts of any transformation. Learning how to set SMART fitness goals will help you decide what you really want and will provide motivation to achieve it.
Having a firm plan for achieving success is satisfying, as you can finally see what needs to be done in order to get to your goals. So far you may have been dreaming of looking or feeling a certain way, hoping that maybe one day that will become reality. Setting goals is doing just that – taking a first step into making this idea real.
Writing down your goals is extremely important! It is not only reaffirming your goals to yourself, but is helping to create a more vivid image of your goal. It helps you see this goal anytime you need that extra kick!Tweet
Here are some important foundations of how to set SMART fitness goals?
They need to be specific
Don’t just say you want to lose weight, or get fitter. Say what size you want to fit, or how much further you want to walk/run.
They need to be measurable
You need to measure progress to stay on track. You want to decide how you will track your workouts and your meals. Decide, plan and write those things down in this space of goal setting sheet.
Your goals need to be attainable
You don’t want to set goals that are faaaar out there. You want to have something that your mind will agree with as something that is possible. Set a smaller goal, reach it and then set another one. Life is much more satisfying this way.
They need to be realistic
Which in this case means: match your lifestyle and your responsibilities. If you are taking care of your family, working, and opening a business, then maybe you physically don’t have enough hours in the day to workout for an hour, and meal prep for two. You would then need to adjust your goal to match your circumstances. Or you can add extra time to achieve it, which brings us to the next part of good fitness goals…
They need to be timely
Set a date for when you want to achieve your goal. Make it not too soon, and too far off as to stop you feeling motivated to do anything!
